What Is a Car Lease?
Think of leasing like a long-term rental agreement, typically 24 to 48 months, where you pay to use a vehicle rather than to own it outright. At the end of your lease term, you can simply return the car before your next commute past Huntsville State Park, upgrade to a newer model, or in some cases, purchase the vehicle at a predetermined price. You're essentially paying for the vehicle's depreciation during the time you drive it, plus interest, and any applicable fees. This is why monthly lease payments are almost always lower than loan payments on the same vehicle.
The Key Numbers in a Lease

Money Factor is the interest rate on your lease, expressed as a small decimal such as 0.00125. Multiply it by 2,400 to get the approximate annual percentage rate. A lower money factor means less interest paid over the life of the agreement. Down Payment and Drive-Off Fees are worth considering carefully. While it's possible to lease with little to no money down, making a larger down payment, called a capitalized cost reduction, will lower your monthly payments. Keep in mind that if the vehicle is stolen or totaled early in the lease, you typically won't recover that upfront cash.
Mileage and Wear
Standard leases come with annual mileage limits, typically ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 miles per year. If you drive more than that, you'll pay a per-mile overage fee at the end of the term.
